The Driver Fitness score, in plain words
What counts. Licence class and endorsements, medical certification, and the driver qualification file. The violations here are mostly paperwork with heavy consequences: driving without the proper CDL class, or with an expired or missing medical card, are among the most fixable points on the whole map — they come from files, not from the road.
The line. FMCSA's intervention threshold for this category is the 65th percentile — at or over it, the category is flagged for enforcement attention, and it is the flag brokers' policies key on. (In FMCSA's current public files, the alert on a carrier's own record is the operative signal — your report card reads it straight from the file.)
Why it matters. Driver Fitness is the audit category: a roadside stop finds the symptom, but a compliance review finds the system. It is also the fastest category to clean legitimately — a current medical card and a complete qualification file erase the conditions that produce these violations at all.
The violations that feed it most

How the measure is built
The measure counts driver-qualification violations found at inspection: wrong licence class for the vehicle or load, missing endorsements, expired or missing medical certification, and qualification-file failures found in audits. The weights on the common items are heavy for paperwork — because FMCSA treats an unqualified driver as a safety event, not a filing error.
What brokers do with this number
Driver Fitness flags read as paperwork risk — the carrier whose files are loose is the carrier whose driver may be unqualified for the load he's hauling, and that is the broker's liability nightmare. Because these violations are qualification failures, a flagged Driver Fitness score raises questions a clean roadside record can't answer: if the files are wrong, what else is?
What a bad month looks like
A driver whose medical card expired last month gets stopped three times before anyone notices. Three inspections, three medical-certificate violations at ×3 — a score spike built entirely out of a calendar failure.
How to lower it
- A tickler file for every medical card and licence expiry — 60, 30, and 7 days out.
- Verify CDL class and endorsements against the truck and the load before dispatch, not after the stop.
- Keep the qualification file audit-ready: application, road test, medical certificate, annual review, for every driver.
The general math — time weights, the 24-month window, and the dilution effect — is in how to lower your CSA score. Violations that don't belong on your record come off through a DataQs challenge. To see your own Driver Fitness standing, check your CSA score free.
Questions
What is the fastest Driver Fitness fix?
A tickler system: every medical card and licence expiry flagged at 60, 30, and 7 days. This category's worst violations are date failures, and dates can be managed.
Does an expired medical card found at inspection stay on the score?
Yes — the violation is accurate, so DataQs won't remove it. It ages off on the 24-month clock. The fix is preventing the next one.
