The Controlled Substances & Alcohol score, in plain words
What counts. Drug and alcohol prohibitions: possession and use violations found at inspection, and the consequences of DUI findings. The counts are small — this is the rarest category — and the weights are at the top of the scale. One event can dominate a small carrier's record and trigger the clearinghouse consequences that follow the driver.
The line. FMCSA's intervention threshold for this category is the 65th percentile — at or over it, the category is flagged for enforcement attention, and it is the flag brokers' policies key on. (In FMCSA's current public files, the alert on a carrier's own record is the operative signal — your report card reads it straight from the file.)
Why it matters. There is no content strategy for lowering this score after the fact, and this page won't pretend otherwise. The category is prevention: a compliant testing program, the pre-employment and random pools run exactly as the rules require, and supervisors who know the reasonable-suspicion standard.
The violations that feed it most

How the measure is built
This category's measure is built from drug and alcohol violations found at inspection or after a crash — possession, use, and refusal findings. There are very few events nationally compared with the other categories, which is why a single one can dominate a small carrier's measure: the weights are at the top of the scale and the denominator is small.
What brokers do with this number
There is no broker conversation to manage here: a live Controlled Substances flag is treated as disqualifying by standard policies, full stop. The consequences run through insurance renewals and customer contracts as much as load boards, which is why this page talks about prevention and process instead of recovery.
What a bad month looks like
There is no ordinary bad month here — one positive test or one roadside possession finding is the whole story. The consequences run past the score: the driver enters the federal Clearinghouse return-to-duty process, and the carrier's record carries the event for the full window.
How to lower it
- Run the testing program by the book — pre-employment, random pool, post-accident — and keep the records audit-clean.
- Train supervisors on reasonable-suspicion observation and documentation.
- Know the return-to-duty process before you need it; it is long, formal, and not navigable by improvisation.
The general math — time weights, the 24-month window, and the dilution effect — is in how to lower your CSA score. Violations that don't belong on your record come off through a DataQs challenge. To see your own Controlled Substances & Alcohol standing, check your CSA score free.
Questions
Can a drug or alcohol violation be challenged in DataQs?
Only if the record itself is wrong — wrong driver, wrong carrier, a testing-lab error documented on paper. The finding itself, when accurate, is not removable.
What happens to the driver?
A verified positive or refusal puts the driver in prohibited status in the FMCSA Clearinghouse until the return-to-duty process — evaluation, treatment, return-to-duty test, follow-up plan — is complete. It is long and formal; plan for it early.
